Kids

20 February 2009

Finally got the great news I've been waiting for since September...after two positive tests, I've come back clean! Surgery successful, no more babies running around! Don't get me wrong, I love the kids I have, but two is PLENTY. Eliz is turning out to be a handful. I don't remember Colin getting into everything like she does. She got a handful of cord the other day and pulled my hairclippers off the table - ended up with a couple tiny cuts on her lip from where she got bonked :-( She's up to three words, says "mama," "dada" and "hi" so far.

*Thought For the Day*
I've decided there's no such thing as the "terrible twos." Trust me, they last a lot longer than that.

Welcome to My World

Welcome aboard! Like pretty much every other blog on the net, this is just going to be about me and my life, mixed with a mismash of random thoughts.

A little about me, for those who haven't been in touch: I'm a sergeant in the Marine Corps, just over 6 years in the service. I deployed in 2003 at the start of the war, and have been stationed in SoCal, Monterey, and North Carolina so far. Before that, I received my BA in journalism at UMaine; planning to use that to get my officer commission soon. I was out of the Marines from Jan '06-Nov '07 - ended up missing it, and haven't regretted coming back at all.

We had Company PT this morning, conducting the new Combat Fitness Test. For those not familiar with this monstrosity, here's a quick rundown. The event consists of three drills: Movement to Contact, Ammo Can Lift, and Maneuver Under Fire.

Movement to Contact - 880 meter sprint in combat boots and cammies. Must be completed in 3:48.
Ammo Can Lift - 30-pound can pressed over your head until arms fully extended, then brought back to your chest. As many repititions as you can do in 2 minutes (min - 45, max - 91)
Maneuver Under Fire: 300-yard obstacle course.
First 75 yards consists of sprinting, low crawling, high crawling, and zig-zagging through a series of cones.
Second 75: dragging and then fireman-carrying a partner.
Third 75: Sprint while carrying two 30-pound ammo cans. At the end, throw a dummy grenade into a 10' x 10' box followed by three pushups.
Last 75: Grab the cans and sprint to the end. Max time allowed - 3:29

I completed the Movement drill in 2:49 and did 45 lifts in about 1:30, then finished off with a time of 2:09 on the Maneuver portion (best time in the company was 2:04). Not bad for a 31-year-old man!
